Picked up my first lever action rifle today!
Just picked up this beauty today! Its a Marlin 1895SBL in 45/70! The gun comes with XS Ghost Ring Sights and a high-vis front post. Also, a picatinny style scope mounting rail. Its also got a full size mag tube so the max round count is 6+1! Really excited to get out to the range and see what she shoots like! Only planned mods are a Leupold scope of some sort.
Any suggestions on which type of scope I should be looking at? Should be a fun little gun to shoot! ![]() ![]() This is the 45/70 next to a .45 HP for size comparison....

I like the Nikon Pro Staff or Look at the New Redfield or Weaver Line of Scopes....... Redfield is now owned by Leopold and has a LifeTime Warranty.................

How are the stock sights?
The fiber optic sights on mine are pretty good. I have no intention of putting a scope on mine. This was purchased to be a close range show stopper gun for anything that came my way showing large teeth. Certainly not any sort of gun that I need a scope for. I have other guns better suited for longer distance. Your needs of course may vary.

^^^^^^^. IMHO, the range on this gun is too short for a scope.

I LOVE THAT GUN!!! That's my favorite rifle from Marlin right now. I just have absolutely no need for a 45-70 but as soon as I can figure one out, I'll be buying that gun. As for scopes, with the distances you will most likely be using it, I would look at a small red dot. I like the Tru-Glo personally and am looking to put one on my 1894c sometime in the near future. They are Eotech knockoffs and seemingly quite well built.
Good luck with it. C |

If you get a scope dont cheap out and buy the Wally World scopes. A friend of my owns a single shot 45/70 and the recoil beats the crap out of those cheap scopes.
Those are fun to shoot and easy to reload for. My buddy bought a Lee hand loader and a mold and just makes bullets where ever. For lead I get him wheel wheights. His is a 32in barrel H&R Buffalo Classic. That barrel can put some distance on the 45/70 |

HUH???? That's the first I've EVER heard of the 45-70 having a short range of anything. BTW. Congrats on the new hardware. Learn it and the caliber and it will never let you down. Last edited by meanc; 06-01-2012 at 10:58 AM. |

for a scope, check out Cabellas, they have scopes for leverguns that match up to the leverevolution ammo. I have one on my Marlin 30/30, and it is very accuarate to 200 yards, and I have shot 300 yards at the range with it.

Lever action centerfires are a hoot. A friend of mine brought over a Henry in 44 mag one time and we shot the snot outta that gun. The weight of the gun soaks up the recoil and clanging stuff at 100 yds was a blast.
The downside is you can run through several hundred 44 mags in no time at all. Tough on the ole wallet.

I have that rifle with the Leupold Scout and it is awesome setup. You can't go wrong with a Aimpoint H-1 either. Congrats. Try wandering over at www.marlinowners.com (?) for alot of good info.

If your using it for hunting a scope is needed for low light conditions.
My dealer has two of these one in 444 and a twin in 45/70 i want both....

Nice rifle. Among my Marlins is the blued 1895 Guide Gun. I added the larger lever and use a Leupold Rifleman 2 to 7X scope.
The older 1894s are drilled and tapped for a peep rear and when combined with a globe front sight are accurate shooters, I wish the modern made 1895s had that feature. Weaver no longer makes their pivot base and rings but they are available, I just picked up 3 sets and will probably use it on mine. The recoil pad on this new stainless is a heck of alot better than the older ones. |

You can replace the safety with a saddle ring while enabling the hammer safety, if I remember correctly. I have not gotten one yet. I can't remember the gunsmith's name.

Mine is older and has the side vent type pad. I've tried a few times to get those Pachmayrs to fit but they're just too short. I've ordered a few times from Brownells always the same result - doesn't properly fit.
