Well, if I remember right, it originally stood for Strayer Tripp International. Sandy Strayer and Virgil Tripp were partners and created the company. At some point there was a split, with Sandy then creating SVI (Strayer Voight) and Tripp going his own way. The STI name and business was sold and is now simply known as STI.

I'm sure others can chime in with more details.

Yep, though it's spelled Voigt and Voigt is no longer involved with SV. Now it's "STI International".

Now that Chip McCormick, Virgil Tripp and Sandy Strayer have all gone their separate ways, STI stands for Science, Technology and Ingenuity.

I have an old McCormick frame around here somewhere. Looks the same since they came out.

The only thing that has changed is the CMC to TRI to STI and SV
otherwise the grips and frames look pretty much the same..

Sti history

though the history of sti at their web site doesnt mention any strayer only tripp your info helps alot now it all makes sense now this means the original of this kind of pistol is the sti the svi is only the product of the disgruntled sandy strayer. I wonder why the svi's are more hot rod like than the sti more accesoriesed......

Odd conclusions

"svi is only the product of the disgruntled sandy strayer."

Have you ever compared the patents held and features offered by the respective makers? Apparently not.

Ever checked the roster of the American Pistolsmith's Guild? Again, apparently not.

Sandy Strayer is there; Bill Skinner is not.

Wil Schuemann, whose barrels are used exclusively by SVI, is there. Again, Skinner is not.

Check it out for yourself:

http://www.sviguns.com/

Are both excellent pistols? Yes. Is "svi is only the product of the disgruntled sandy strayer" ? Only to the uninformed - wilfully or otherwise....

Just FYI,

Dave Skinner Owns STI, he doesn't make the guns, he hires Gusnmiths to make them!!
Quality Guns that run and don't break all the time!!

Guns that run for over 8 years, like in my case, without butsting a barrel lug.

Gusn that you can pick up, sight in, and go shoot a Nationals with without a single hitch!!

This is what STI stand for!!

QUALITY, RELIABILITY and ACCURACY!!

Who cares who belongs to the Guild and who doesn't.

As long as the Guns WORK!!!!

I am greatful for this thread.... I was completely lost in the "who is who" of the STI-SVI thing .

Can I add to the question instead of starting another thread?

I'm curious about the Infinity name, is it just part of SVI or another brand? And also what role Chip McCormick had with these 2 companies?

Thanks, and I apologize for hijacking the thread.

Strayer-Voigt, Incorporated is the name of the company while Infinity is the brand of the firearm. It's the only brand that SV produces, so it is, in a sense, Strayer Voigt en toto.

My understanding is that CM fronted the money to get the things into production and, thus, had an exclusive distribution deal for a few years. Anyone else know anything different?

I wish SVI would more aggressively market it guns - particularly its single stacks. I have a SVI full size double stack 45 ACP (that I shot yesterday and I am crazy about), but I have never even seen a SVI single stack. I would probably consider buying one if I had a basis for comparison or a sample to fondle.

I have several STI single stacks, but I haven't yet bought one of their double stacks. I may have my local gunsmith build me a STI double stack longslide 45 ACP sometime.

SVI's single stack guns are excellent pistols. I have one with a .45 and 9mm setup. The trigger is about 2.5lbs and the fit and finish are beyond reproach. They usually cost about $400 more than the double stacks because the frames are more time cosuming and expensive to make. I also have two of Sandy's double stacks that I use in USPSA. I think SVI is the finest gunmaker in the world for hi speed competition guns, but that is just my opinion since I own 3 of his guns and plan on ordering an open gun in a few months.
If you every get to Dallas, contact me and I will let you shoot my single stack and take you to meet Sandy.

Dave

Chip and Virgil designed the frame...

Story goes..after one of the nationals..where there were paras and P9s..Chip called Virgil and said..this thing ain't going away...and thus they designed the original CMC frame..

Also..I believe Wil Schuemann had a role in the design of the Caspian HiCap frame..

Took my single-stack SVI (stainless)

to the club shoot last week. I took the first 2 events, which is the prize limit. Took another one with the SVI, a fourth with the 625 PC, and let a couple other guys shoot the SVI while I played with the revolver.

One of them took 2 other events, including a shoot-off for a tie.

Oh - know any other 1911 that has the plunger tube as an integral part of the frame?

How many have frames MACHINED from forgings, instead of cast?

SVI single-stacks have both.
