IDPA 1911 pistol
Here is my S&W 1911 I use for IDPA. Bob Miller of Miller Custom, did the accuracy work on the gun. That one hole group can be covered by a U.S. Nickel and consists of a full magazine of 8 rounds at 25 yards from a Ransom rest. Ammo was Federal 185 gr. Gold Match.
I used the gun in three seperate matches of about 100 rounds each without cleaning the gun to test for reliable function. Not one FTF or FTE in 300 rounds without cleaning.

I use this Sig P226 X-5 Competition .40s&w in USPSA Limited.
I've got ten Mecgar 15 round mags for it. It can take standard P226 mags, but you have to shave a little off the bottom plastic guards on the 15 rd capacity mags to get them to fit, but no big deal. Saves a lot of money vs buying the mags specific to the X-5. Last edited by JGus; 05-25-2012 at 12:08 PM. |

What brand rear sight is on that Caspian slide 1911 on the far left? It looks like it could be a tri set sight.

Competition firearms
Hi guys,
since most of the threads are more on duty style firearms, soI guess, I would like to start a thread on competition firearms. What short arms do you guys for competition shooting, with pics, please? Here is my setup: My CZ75 Pre B in 9mm: The installed system has a custom front and rear sight in tactical style, that I use for more dynamic shooting. The system on the bottom is my standard system I use for static shooting. Trigger has been changed to SA with triggerstop and the trigger pull is reduced to approx. 1100 gramms. ![]() And here my Colt MK IV Series 70 in 9mm. I am in the progress of setting it up for competition shooting. Trigger is changed to a match grade trigger with triggerstop. Sear and hammer springs are changed to reduced ones and the grips are Nill Master with magwell. I am still waiting for my adjustable Bo-Mar sight set, I orderd at kensight.com the week before last. So more pics will follow. ![]() So, what do you guys shoot for competition? |

A lot will depend on what type of competition. Huge difference between setting up a race gun for USPSA open and IDPA CDP/ESP. For IDPA, biggest change is usually just a magwell/speed chute. Maybe better iron sights, extended thumb safety, etc. Not sure what you would do for a race gun in steel challenge, PPC, bullseye, etc. Here's a pic of a Kimber 1911 I used to use in IDPA.

This is my Sig P226 X-5 Competition .40S&W (SA only) 5" barrel I use in USPSA Limited.
This thing is a tack driver. It can out shoot both my Les Baer Custom Concept V and Les Baer Premier II from 25 yards from a rest. And that is not easy for me to say as I love my LB's. But the X-5 is designed for competition and Sig does advertise it as amazingly accurate. The trigger isn't as good as my LB's, but it's still an excellent trigger. It's not a 1911 so there is a very slight amount of creep, very slight. It didn't require any "tuning" at all to any component of the gun, nor any of the mags (other than adding mag extensions). It was ready for competition straight out of the box, unlike a lot of other competition guns and mags that need additional work/tuning before they are competition ready. I ordered an after market magwell from Danny Woodard, and extended base pads from Roger Sherman for my Mecgar Standard P226 15 rd mags that takes them to 18 to 21 rds of .40s&w depending on which mag base package you order (and the extended mag base pads from Roger Sherman fit perfectly in both the factory magwell and the Danny Woodard aftermarket magwell). Here is a good article from Handgun Magazine about the X-5. Mine is not the model with the trigger that can be adjusted quickly with a simple tool (the article reviews the model with the easily adjustable trigger and trigger adjustment tool). Mine is the $1600 version, not the $2400 (suggested retail) in the article. I love this gun for Limited div competition. http://www.handgunsmag.com/2010/09/2...gxfive_011306/ Last edited by JGus; 06-26-2012 at 09:45 AM. |

How many rounds can you get in the x-5 mags?

The two that came with the gun will hold 14 rds of .40s&w. I also ordered 8 Mecgar P226 15 rd mags .40s&w, and with some sanding/filing down of the sides a little, these mags will fit in both the factory and aftermarket magwell (made by Danny Woodard).
But, I also ordered extended basepads from Roger Sherman (called mousetraps), that extend the Mecgar mags to 18 or 21 rds of .40s&w, depending on which option you order from Roger. And these extended basepads will fit into the factory magwell and Danny Woodard aftermarket magwell without any modifications. |

21 would be nice but I doubt they would fit the mag gauge. 18 would be just barely acceptable. Less is no bueno.

I don't have the 21 rd extensions, but according to everything I've read on these mag extensions, even the 21 rd mag extensions still fit within USPSA Limited requirements. But I've read a lot of people that have the 21 rd said that its incredibly tough to get #21 in the mag, and several only get it to 20. |

That would be plenty. I looked into the x5 a while back and from what I remember from then I was turned off by mag capacity. Maybe I'll have to play with it again.
