Safe long-term storage solution for my Scandium Bobtail 1911SC?
I am only able to shoot it about once per year, and am looking for the best storage (and cleaning) solutions for my new Scandium Bobtail 1911SC.
What do you think of these? The only concern I have is that the papers and VCI rust-inhibitor tabs that Brownells sells are not supposed to be used with alloy weapons. Not sure what's in these that might be bad or not: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=1...-STORAGE-CASES Also, what would you suggest as safe for cleaning? Ballistol (ok for alloy?), Frog Lube? Slip2000 (there is a 3-pack with degreaser, bore cleaner, and oil at Brownells). Am thinking of coating with Eezox before storage. I don't want to have to buy a lot, as I won't use it much and don't want to take up storage space at my family's house. Thanks! |

I prefer NON chlorinated brake cleaner.
I would just store the firearm, in a waterproof safe. best prevention of rust for long term storage, would be to smother in in your favorite gun oil. |

I live overseas much of the year, in a country where guns are not allowed. I like to shoot when I come home.

Once a year? Drench it in your favorite gun oil.

I knew an old timer back in the day when I was just starting out shooting who would, after he completed cleaning and wiping down with whatever he was using at the time, put the pistol in a large freezer bag with a few of those desiccant packs, zipped it up and that was his solution to "long term storage". Seemed to work for him, never saw any crap on any of his handguns.

I've read somewhere on another forum that S&W recommends Brake Free CLP for cleaning Scandium. I guess one can get it at Wal-Mart quite cheap. I think I will add some Eezox for storage.

I was in the same situation a few years ago. I simply drenched my guns in CLP/Breakfree and kept them sealed in plastic to keep from drying out. Didn't really have a better option at the time, but it worked out very well. One blued gun was kept this way for well over a year with absolutely no issues.

My concern is for the Scandium frame.
I've read that storing in some fluids, even if they are mild, are a really bad idea over time. It looks like I'll be planning to clean my Scandium 1911 Bobtail SC with CLP/Breakfree from Wal-mart. I will likely also add some Eezox to protect the steel. I'm going to contact the Borestores company to find out if Scandium is safe in their storage bags or not. I read that the little yellow chips, and some papers you wrap the gun in to avoid moisture contain chemicals that can damage the Scandium finish. Hmm... |

I have all my guns in those Bore Store cases to keep away the rust, and to keep me from hinting against the other guns while I put one in and out of the small safe I have.
