Colt .38 Super

Was thinkin about gettin the colt .38 super in stainless finish. Seen them on gunsamerica for about $800. Just wondering what everyone thinks of Colt's .38 super models reliability and accuracy compared to other models and if that price is reasonable. Is there any other .38 super you guys could direct me to would be of great help for around the same price or less.

Thanks guys.

Edit.

It says Series 80 on it if that's any help?

My Colt .38 was a 2004 model IIRC. It was actually the first reliable 1911 I owned. Quality was good, accuracy was good. They don't compare to higher end guns, but for the price I was more than satisfied.

Once I got more serious about using the .38, I traded up to a Baer, mostly for the adjustable sights and match accuracy for long range shooting.

For that price I would buy another Colt. You can always get it tweeked later if it needs help. I hear good things about the RIA .38's, but never shot one.

Purchased a ss Colt .38 Super . . .

a couple of years ago and love it. It has been 100% reliable out of the box and accurate as a laser beam. I had my local smith (a top notch 1911 guy) do an action/trigger job (about 3.5 lbs.), install a checkered/arched mainspring housing, short trigger, and bead blast the finish. I added a set of ivory grips. I would encourage you to get one if you're considering a .38 Super. If you like it half as much as I do mine you'll be glad you did. Tom

Mine was a dog with fleas. Several issues that were fixed by Mr. Heinie and the gun has been flawless since then. One of most prized possessions.

My current production .38 Super Government Model (#O2991) is not the SS version... but I love it just the same. No issues, just a fine shooter and not terribly hard on the eyes....

Fresh out of the box following its first day at the range (pictured with 25-yard target);

Well worn in... caught taking a short break during a long day on the action-pistol range (sporting a couple minor enhancements);

Thanks for the replies, looks like it's a pretty good pistol. Now I just have to wait for MY gunsmith to give me a price since all our guns come in from the states and your money is worth more then ours.

Can't you put adjustable sights on the .38 model on the 80s series it looks like you can take the sights off because they're black and the slide is stainless steel?

I would be able to modify it into a super accurate gun right?

I got my Government Blued Series 80 back in October and I absolutely love it. The fit and finich are excellent, and it has been flawless out of the box with anything I`ve stuffed in the mags. The ONLY thing I`ve done is swap onto it a spare barrel bushing I had in my parts box to tighten it up. It helped improve accuracy dramatically. It was shooting 3-4 inch groups offhand at 15 yards...now it shoots 2-3 inch groups. It would definately shoot better in steadier hands.

Oh yeah...mine cost me around $780 all fees included.

Bought my first 38 super in the mid 80's; a combat commander. It is one of my favorites to shoot.

I liked the 38 super round so much, I bought a series 80 government in 38 super that is now one I often take to the range.

Super is a bit costly to shoot, but worth the cost to me!

I bought a stainless NRM Super right after they were introduced in '04. Other than a sort of odd bushing fit - loose in the slide and tight on the barrel - it was a good gun out of the box. I did a few minor mods to make it "mine", but other than a match bushing, it was just stuff that I prefer. Two feeding malfs in the first 200 rounds are the only failures of any kind that I've had in well over 1000 rounds of reloads. I sold my Mil-Spec Super to pay for it. The Springfield was a nice gun too, but it didn't have the little horsey.

Just got a new colt .38 super, only had time to put 20 rounds through it so far. Beautiful handler and shoots way better than I do, going to move to the top of the pecking order as my favorite shooter.

I prefer the one on the bottom, Because it has more of an original style. The one on the top has slanted serrations and it has bevertail tail, which I don't like in a Colt 38 Super.

That is exactly the way my Colt Gov't Model .38 Super and .45 Gold Cup came packaged.

I suspect you are quite a bit younger than I am.

I have bought pistols that came packed in cardboard boxes.

It is one of those things that I wasn't paying attention to. They changed the packaging, but I really don't remember when. Those fancy plastic boxes are nice, but do add to the cost of the product which is already high.

Remember, you are paying an excise tax on the gun, but it is also calculated on the cost of the packaging.

I looked at some new Colt .38 Supers at the gun show yesterday, and I was indeed tempted. I bought my first one in the early 80s, and it is still going strong.

New Colt 02991

I just added one of these to the rotation, my first .38 super. I was impressed with the fit and finish of the pistol and it will become my daily vehicle piece.

I picked up various types of ammo and all of it feeds well. I could only find Cor Bon hollow points and have heard that some folks had trouble with them.
Any tips on where to find defensive ammo for this pistol?

Bought an XSE series SS commander Super 6 weeks ago for my wife. We both fell in love with this gun. Accurate & reliable (so far - 500 rds).

Shoots so sweet I am now in the market for a super myself. Not sure why -but I got to have something to keep my 45's company.

Can be loaded down to 850 fps for target shooting, and with self defense loads in the neighborhood of 1200+ fps, its hard to beat.

Only drawback I see to date is getting an adequate # of cases on hand. You rarely can pick them up on the range, so have to buy new, and at 17-19 cents each it's a bummer.

To sum up my comments, it's a great cartridge if you reload. If you don't, perhaps you might want to reconsider.

As with just about all the guns (bought in the 1970s, early 1980s) inherited from my father.
