HOUSTON -- A gunman with a semi-automatic weapon killed a customer inside a northeast Houston check-cashing store in a crime that brought out a SWAT team and led to three schools placed on lockdown Friday, police told KPRC Local 2.

Investigators said a man burst into the check-cashing store at 715 Quitman shortly after 1 p.m. and shot a homeless man trying to cash his Social Security check.

"This check-cashing place has been robbed multiple times over the last few years, so we believe that may be the motive in this case," said Capt. Bruce Williams with the Houston Police Department.
SWAT officers thought the gunman hid in an adjacent vacant building. But when the building was searched, the shooter was gone, officials said.

"That happens. These things are very dynamic. When we get here, we get here as fast as we possibly can and try to lock it down as quick as we can, but sometimes they slip through the cracks," Williams said.

Three nearby Houston Independent School District campuses, Davis High School, Marshall Middle School and Ketelsen Elementary School, were placed on lockdown as a precaution.

HISD spokesman Norm Uhl said the lockdowns were lifted by 3 p.m. and all schools were dismissed at their regular times, when police realized the gunman was not in the area.

Investigators said a witness first thought she spotted the man going into the elementary school but later realized it was a SWAT officer.

The gunman is believed to have an AK-47 or a similar rifle.

He was described only as a 300-pound man wearing camouflage.
