Smith 646 moonclips
If any of you out there own a 646 can you tell me what brass works with the narrow moonclips and what brass works with the wide moonclips. I just bought one and I need more moons but I'd rather not spend the time and money to try x different loads in the two different size moons.

I admit I'm not a whiz on all the S&W models, but I'm drawing a blank on the 646. I can tell you my experiances with .45ACP, 10mm, and 9mm in moonclips. I'd include .40S&W in the 10mm but haven't actually done that trick, yet. What caliber are you asking about?
Also, I am not sure what you mean by "narrow" and "wide". Bart Noir |

You might call TK and ask

The 646 is .40s&w, and I do believe that the 10mm moonclips cannot be used in this model. Smith and Wesson makes moonclips for the 646 in .035" and .042" thickness, thats what I mean by wide and narrow. I'll give TK a call tomorrow and see what I can find out.

The 10 mm is on Smith's "N" frame, and the 646 is on the smaller "L" frame cylinder, so I wouldn't think you could interchange the moonclips. On my 646, I found the ones that fit "Winchester White Box" .40's the best, and that's all I've ever used. I couldn't even tell you which size I'm using. I am going to order some of the "Rimz" plastic clips so I don't have to use the de- and re-mooner to load and unload at the range. Great gun, really like mine, which is the "second model" (not the official designation) with the barrel/underlug like a 686.

I shoot a 646 in competition. When I first started shooting it I would sometimes suffer from light primers strikes.
I called S&W and the S&W gunsmith I spoke to said .40 brass has very inconsistent rim thicknesses and that's why they packaged two different moonclip thicknesses with the gun. Then he suggested the easiest solution was to use an extended firing pin from Cylinder and Slide - https://shop.cylinder-slide.com/ccp5...tstr=HOME:6:50 I spent $12 for an extended firing pin and no longer worry about the rim thickness of my brass or thickness of the moon clips. I just load and shoot. |

I purchased a 100 moonclips from Ranch Products and have been using them with Winchester, Remington and federal cases in my 646. I believe the Ranch product cases are the thinner ones.
