Trailboss
I've been shooting up some Trail Boss in my 45 Colt and am wondering whether it can be used for 45 ACP.
I'd think you'd have to use a lighter bullet with a max OAL just to get enough powder in there. Maybe use a lighter recoil spring too. Since I never use an unpublished load I'll just have to wait. BTW, the max TB load published on IMR's site for a 250 LRNFP 45 Colt is very pleasant to shoot from my 4 5/8" Vaquero. http://www.imrpowder.com/data/handgu...ss-feb2005.php

Sorry I don't have an answer on the acp load . I think you're right though . It will be tough getting enough TB in the case .
Trail Boss has been tough to find . I plan on giving it a try . We've got 30 lbs due in next week . Thanks for sharing .

Since Trailboss was designed to fill the large cases of .45 Long Colt, and .44 Magnum, and produce a mild load for CAS, I would doubt that it would even be functional in the .45acp.
I be concerned about a squib, and if the bullet did clear the barrel, it'd probably drop on your foot......

I have looked into using TB for .45LC and I too would think you may not be able to get enouch in the 45acp case. I have read that in order to get an accurate powder dump using a 550B you have to go to the large powder bar.
Saw a lot of TB at a gun show last week. Most prices about $12.99 but that is not a full pound; I think it is 9-12 oz. bottles. |

It has been done, although without IMR/Hodgdon testing or approval:

Using sight black at 15 yards with the heel of my strong hand resting on a table I got three 1.5" 5-shot groups. That's the best I've done with it. I attribute that to having the outdoor range all to myself, and because it's not a punishing max pressure load. I've used Unique and Blue Dot for max pressure loads that gave me about 2.5 inches. Gotta use that sight black. It's essential for getting a consistant sight picture with these sights.
