10 to 12 is what most folks seem to use. I prefer 12 personally as it gives you a bit more energy to strip rounds out of the mag and whatnot.

All else being equal, I'd rather practice the faster way early and often. If you can't hit the button with your strong thumb without shifting the gun (I couldn't), modify the gun until you can.

Keep in mind that the longer 9mm ejector will often be too long to allow ejection of a loaded .38 round. The shorter .38 ejector usually works fine for both.

Yes, the ramped barrels often need more slope than they have out of the box. If you shoot round nose exclusively it may not ever be apparent.
