I believe GI reccomends WD-40.
Though I have used shooter choice without issue.
I would not use gun scrubbers or brake cleaners as they strip all the oil out of the metal and can dull the finish.

I'll never own another 1911 without a checkered front strap, its well worth the expense.
Much better than grip tape and a plus is it will add value.
